  • DMZ is written by Brian Wood with artwork by Wood and Riccardo Burchielli. I was really skeptical about reading this book regardless of all the praise I heard. After picking up and reading the first trade, I went out and bought the other 4 trades (6 total as of this post) and read them straight through.

The story revolves around a civil war that takes place between the United States and the Free States, which are more of an idea originating from Middle Class America fed up with its government than a geographic entity. The DMZ is what was left of Manhattan when the two warring sides came to a stalemate. The story centers around Matty Roth, a naive photojournalist intern, who becomes stranded in the DMZ when the news crew and soldiers he accompanied into the demilitarized zone are killed by insurgents. He becomes the only journalist on the ground and begins to report the daily struggles of the people living in Manhattan. Wood portrays the story with such great detail that it really comes to life. You find yourself taking a side, but not the side you would imagine.

Read DMZ issue 1 here (pdf).
